How to Upgrade an Old and Boring Condominium Unit

April 23, 2018

title

Living in a condominium has a lot of perks. You get to enjoy top of the line amenities, appreciate secured living and secured units, and you also get to enjoy the perks of living in a hotel or resort-like environment. The downside is, it is not easy to renovate when you are in this kind of neighborhood. You need to identify the type of renovation you want to do and let us guide you in beautifying your home.

First off, you need to identify if you will be doing a major renovation or a minor one. Major overhaul means a change of flooring or pipes, knocking down walls, putting up partitions, adding lights and sockets, and replacing window frames. Minor revamps mean putting a fresh coat of paint or wallpaper, electrical repair, carpentry, and accessorizing.

Once you decide to do a major renovation, it is polite to let your neighbors know about this. You need to consider the noise it will create, the coming in and out of construction people from your unit, as well as the chaos of all the construction materials being brought to your place. You don’t need your neighbor’s approval but the mere fact of you telling them what to expect in the coming days will make them more understanding of the situation.

You might also consider finding a temporary place to stay while there is an ongoing renovation. You will be needing to move out your furniture and belongings to accommodate the changes you are making. This is needed as there may be a lot of dust, the smell of paint, and the mess the renovation will create. Anything that is left in the unit should be secured to avoid losing your belongings especially your valuables.

Please be reminded that living in a condominium has its limits. You only need to change what is inside your unit. You can’t change anything outside the building or outside the hallway. You will also be needing permission from the administration or property department of the building. Be ready to hire a professional and provide the administration office with the architectural and engineering drawings signed and sealed by a licensed architect. Also, be able to provide information on how many days this will take and the number of people (admin department might also ask for names and IDs of the workers) who will be coming in and out of the building and secure a work permit for the workers.

While you are in the admin office, do not forget to double check what can and cannot be changed. Make sure to follow the rules and regulations of the building to avoid unexpected problems in the future.

If you decide to install more lighting or bring in bigger appliances or install additional air conditioning unit, be able to check the allowable electrical load per unit which can be attained from the above-mentioned office. We wouldn’t want you being the cause of an electrical failure in the building.

Well, to make things easier, if you decide to make minor renovations, you no longer need to seek permission from the admin office. All you have to do is find inspiration from the internet and from architectural magazines on what you can do to upgrade your home.

A fresh coat of paint or using wallpaper in your rooms will bring in new vibe. Just make sure this is cohesive and coordinated with the rest of your home. It is best for you to go with neutral shades if you want a minimalistic look. But if you are bold and adventurous, you may opt to try color, patterns, and prints on your walls.

You can also consider opening up the windows and letting in natural light. You may change the curtains to change the mood in a room. Put additional seating areas with side tables and coffee tables in each room to create a nook of your own.  You may also add dual function furniture to serve as additional storage space.

For a cheap and chic way to update your condominiums look and feel, you may use accent pieces such as a colored furniture to liven up a room. You may also add mirrors to enlarge a small area or you may add a touch of greenery to bring the outdoors indoors. A plain wall can be decorated with picture frames with beautiful pictures or you may opt to use a designed frame with a simple picture. For a pop of color in a room, you may use colored beddings in the bedroom, colored pillows in the living room and colored wall hangings in the bathroom and colored embellishments in the kitchen.

If flooring can’t be changed, rugs and carpet is the answer. Just make sure to choose the right design and color. Another quick fix you can do is to change the handles on doors and handles on cabinets to serve as an accent to a room. And for a cashless worry-free makeover, just move or reorganize your furniture to change the aura the room gives.

There are a lot of ways you can do to change the look and feel of your home. You can even indulge in small weekend projects to upgrade what you have or to even give purpose to useless furniture. All it takes is some research and a little elbow grease.

I hope as the day ends, you get to enjoy the new look of your home. And I hope we were able to help you out decide on what your next project will be.
