With this, a Billionaire was made. Dr. Andrew Lim Tan is a magnate in diverse fields of real estate, tourism, liquor and fast food in The Philippines. He started his empire with a dream of owning a grocery store when he was in his younger years. And a life lesson from his father made him who he is today. According to Dr. Tan: “A week after arriving in the Philippines I happened to wake up one day at 7 o’clock in the morning. My father got angry and he scolded me. As a newcomer in the country, he said, I had to work hard than the people here. “You cannot wake up at 7 o’clock. You must wake up at 5 o’clock.” I was 16 then and that incident opened my eyes to the importance of diligence and hard work, and I have taken my father’s advice to heart since then.”
Dr. Tan is a self-made billionaire and an admired entrepreneur. He was born in the province of Fijian in China and spent his childhood in Hong Kong living in a tenement housing where his family shares a small space with 4 other families. They then decided to move to Manila and spent his college years. It was not easy for him and his family to start in an unfamiliar territory. “It was hard juggling a part-time job and going to college, but I never complained. I kept at it until I learned how to manage. I learned that whether it’s working for studying, doing the best I could bring me a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment. What’s more, it helped me become a better person” according to Dr. Tan.
In 1974, he graduated with flying colors in his alma mater, the University of the East with a degree in Accountancy. Money and business did not come easy. He also worked for other companies which gave him the courage and strength to start his own company. The late Leonardo Ty of Union Hitachi was a former colleague and he said that Mr. Tan is one of the most hardworking and conscientious employees in his company.
In 1989, Dr. Andrew Tan became the #1 residential and office condominium developer in the Philippines. He was also able to withstand the economic crisis that came after because of the companies he built and the principles he lives by. “Business was tough when I started my 1st company. When you don’t have much capital, it is paramount that you exercise your nose a lot, much like a dog that never cease to sniff out for food. You cannot afford to fail and lose vital resources. That is how you develop an instinct for success.”
This started his empire. He then built and developed vast empty lands into a mixed-use community called townships. He built his dreams and helped our countrymen with the jobs he offers and the vision he shares. According to Dr. Tan, “Real estate is the industry closest to my heart. I wake up every morning with a feeling of excitement, knowing that I will be building more homes and helping more Filipinos realize their dreams owning a home.”
With a net worth of $2.5B as of 2017, Dr. Andrew Tan built all these with hard work and determination. Barbara Heights in IloIlo; Davao Park District in Lanang and the Woodside and ArcoVia City in Pasig; Northill Gateway and The Upper East in Bacolod; Alabang West and Southwoods City in the South of Metro Manila; Boracay Newcoast; Suntrust Ecotown in Tanza, Cavite; Twin Lakes in Tagaytay and a Township in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga to add up to the very successful projects being completed by Megaworld Corporation.
To pay homage to his humble beginnings, he decided to revitalize the world’s oldest Chinatown in Manila we all know as Binondo. He created a Luxury mall called the Lucky Chinatown Mall.
