A little history. This is the Tale of “The Weaver Girl and The Cowherd” from the Han Dynasty. The celebration originated from the 7^th daughter of the Emperor of Heaven, goddess Zhi Nu and her forbidden romance to an orphan farm boy Niu Lang. The boy wanted to meet the girl of her dreams. When he saw the goddess bathing in the lake with her sisters, the ox and the boy stole her fairy clothes. He then used this as an opportunity to have the lady’s hand in marriage. She then fell in love and said yes to the proposal. They got married and had two children. Just when everything is full of happiness, the furious goddess of heaven banished them to the opposite sides of the Silver River. They were sent to distant stars and was only allowed to see each other on the 7^th day of the 7^th lunar month.
